Project Overview
Ringwood East Training Depot is a Department of Defence facility located on the eastern outskirts of Melbourne. Two dams on site required rectification, pest control and revegetation works.
Scope of Work
The project team delivered 13,000m² of site remediation works on Dam 2 which included excavation and backfilling of 60,000m³ of material, the construction of 50m of gabion walls and construction on a steep 2.5m high embankment. Materials used on site include 1,500t of mixed rock, 3,300t of fill, 201t of gabion rock, 460t of beaching rock and 250t of PM3/20 base materials. The works included site establishment, construction of track to access dam base, then the excavation of the mud base to reach the hard ground area under water. Rock was then laid upon the new based to a height of 800mm above the waterline using 1,300t of rock. 500mm of water was then pumped out of the dam to allow for the placement of geofabric and commence fill and shaping works inside the dam.
Geofabric was installed in 1m layers and in double layers on base and water faces. Benching rock and gabion rock were then laid to a depth of 600mm. A 3m wide rubble path using the PM3/20 material was constructed along the lip of the dam. Final works were landscaping of all exposed areas including the creation of garden beds and rock walls.
During construction the project team altered the shape of the dam for workability, aesthetics and to allow water to disperse freely into the dam. Works were conducted adjacent to neighbouring residential properties requiring going liaison and ensuring works did not occur in early morning or at night. A major challenge on the project was ensure that works adjacent to neighbouring properties didn’t affect the ground conditions or cause the dam walls to collapse. Works also ensure that access paths between residential properties and the dam were in place to allow ease of access for future maintenance.
Three full time employees completed the works over three weeks and ahead of schedule. Plant and equipment utilised included a 14t excavator, loader, 12,000L water truck, skid steer and tippers.
