Project Overview
McMahon Services were engaged by BMD Constructions to complete this redevelopment project at the Kauri Parade Sporting Complex, as part of the ‘Community Recreation and Sports Facilities Program’, funded by the State Government.
The project involved the redevelopment of the John Mathwin Reserve, an old landfill site, and expansion of the existing Kauri Parade Sporting Complex to make way for new tennis courts, which will double as netball courts and new clubrooms.
The project scope included the following:
- Strip topsoil;
- Strip waste fill (clean material);
- Dig containment cells;
- Cut rubbish to design level and place in containment cell;
- Cap rubbish;
- Construct rubble pad, allowing construction of the concrete slab;
- Place topsoil to batters;
- Backfill 4.5m high retaining walls.
The original scope provided by the client meant the team were to ‘cut to fill’ over the whole site, making it difficult to contain exposed large areas of rubbish and potentially causing odour problems down the track. McMahon Services proposed a methodology that would use containment cells in the deeper sections of fill, substantially reducing the exposure of rubbish as well as allowing for more geotechnical suitable material to be used across greater areas of the site.
McMahon Services utilised extensive material tracking to fulfill the strict environmental conditions attached to the works, and readily identified material movements from the original location to the final destination. The environmental consultant and auditor were extremely pleased with the team’s tracking reports, and efforts onsite.
McMahon Services worked very closely with the client whilst developing an alternative methodology that would significantly reduce the project time, and produce cost and environmental savings to the client. The team have received great feedback from all parties involved.
