Ballera Camp Accommodation Extension

Project Overview

McMahon Services was awarded the Design & Construct contract for an extension to the Ballera Camp – a Santos accommodation facility located in the Cooper Basin, south-west Queensland. The Ballera Camp extension contract, which was for a 69 bedroom accommodation facility, is one of several contracts that McMahon Services has been awarded by Santos for civil and construction works in the region.

The design elements of the contract included:

  • Design of civil works
  • Design of hydraulic services, e.g. water, sewerage, fire hose reel and hydrant, pipe work reticulation, sewer pump station and water chiller plant and correction
  • Design of all electrical services including communication and fire detection services
  • Detailed service identification
  • Site strip and stockpile
  • Trim and compact subgrade
  • Supply and placing of rubble fill to create building plateaus
  • Placement of building precast footings and other concrete items (steps, ramps and slabs)
  • Batter treatment to building plateaus
  • Receipt and placement of 11 client supplied buildings
  • Installation and commissioning of a client supplied sewer pump station
  • Installation and connection of a client supplied water chiller plant and two 500 /KVA generators
  • Installation and connection of three fire tanks and a fire pump house containing fire pumps
  • Associated civil works for accommodation and pathways, including verandas

The accommodation comprised two clusters of four buildings, two single storey modules and a separate laundry module as well as essential services at the site, which had to be installed and connected.

To complete the camp extension, McMahon Services used a multi-skilled workforce which peaked at 40 staff. Indigenous personnel formed part of the multi-skilled team, with indigenous contractors sourced from Intract Indigenous Contractors as well as an additional four indigenous workers from surrounding homelands.

In-house equipment including mini-excavators and bobcats were used to strip the site, stockpile materials, trim and compact subgrade and place rubble fill for building plateaus.

Concrete construction experts and McMahon Services subsidiary, Ballestrin, was the key subcontractor for the concrete works, which included precast and in-situ concrete for the site for example, steps ramps and slabs. Working in tandem McMahon Services and Ballestrin deployed a range of in-house equipment including a 100 tonne crane, a 250 tonne crane, elevated work platforms (EWP) and bobcat mounted concrete pumps to install the accommodation.

McMahon Services safely and efficiently delivered the Ballera Camp accommodation extension on time. This has enabled the removal of two smaller, temporary mobile camps from the site, housing 40 personnel.
