Adelaide Airport required their original International Terminal Building to be demolished to make way for a new development including a new taxi drop off zone and a forecourt for the Atura Hotel, as well as providing room for future proposed terminal expansion works. The Building was opened in 1982 comprising of two aircraft bays and one aerobridge.
Scope of Work
This two stage project was for the demolition of the former International Terminal Building, existing traffic ramp and bridge and the installation of new in-ground services to enable future infrastructure works.
Demolition scope included pay station canopy and associated structures, outdoor tenancy building, walkways, services termination works, elevated road and northern ramp, animal relief station and enclosure, bike racks, security fencing and the International Terminal Building structures and canopy. Over 19,400t of concrete and 900t of steel was demolished and recycled. 3,100m² of sheeting with asbestos and 100t of general asbestos waste was remediated and disposed of off-site at licenced EPA receiving stations. Some asbestos containing materials were identified in the International Terminal Building and was subsequently removed, treated and disposed of off site under asbestos handling conditions.
Civil works included construction of 200m of road under an existing bridge, 100m of stormwater reinforced concrete pipe installation and associated pits, new services including water mains, gas, fire, electrical and communication services, blocking of existing pipes, 300m of kerb repairs, erection of road barriers, 550m² of asphalting, spoon drains, pedestrian ramps, signage, Type 1 security fencing with automated sliding gates, Type 3 airside pavements, apron walkways and line marking.
Works were undertaken inside an operational airport requiring strict environmental control measures to ensure no foreign object debris affected airside operations. Works were conducted adjacent to pedestrian and vehicle traffic and required maintaining access to retained terminal building and tenancies at all times while protecting building facades. The project team worked closely with airport staff and the Australian Federal Police to ensure their needs were met, including providing access paths and working nightshifts and out of hours to cater for the requirements of the airport.
Workforce peaked at 20 personnel delivering 13,000 workhours without incident. Plant and equipment utilised on the project included 250t Hydraulic Mobile Crane, Komatsu PC450 and PC300 Demolition Excavators with grapple, hammer and pulveriser attachments, scissor and boom lifts, water truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, semi-trailer, bin truck, service vehicle, wheel washers, 30t and 13t civil excavators, 16t Franna crane, hydro vac truck and a 2.5t smooth drum roller.
