Winners at SafeworkSA Awards 2012

Site Safety Supervisor, Tim Cotton, wins 2012 SafeworkSA Award for Category 4

Site Safety Supervisor, Tim Cotton has been awarded an illustrious State Government SafeWorkSA Award for achieving outstanding safety outcomes during demolition and salvage works for the Adelaide Oval Redevelopment.

Tim was recognised for Category 4 – Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety for an outstanding contribution by an OHS Manager or a person with OHS responsibility.

In front of over 400 guests, Tim was acknowledged by the Minister for Industrial Relations, the Hon Russell Wortley MLC, for his commitment to safety best practice in the workplace.

McMahon Services was engaged to deconstruct the Grandstands and other structures within the precinct, calling for a highly accelerated program with three separate demolition sites within the one work site, running simultaneously for the duration of the project.

A team of up to 25 personnel performed high risk demolition works over a seven day shift rotation with zero LTI’s and MTI’s reported.

SafeWorkSA and the panel of judges agreed that overall project management coupled with strong OHS planning and management was critical to the overall success of the high-risk project.

Tim was instrumental in developing thorough documentation, from an overarching Health Safety and Environmental Plan to a Project Risk Assessment, safe work area signage, Job Safety Analysis (JSAs) and Safe Act Observations (SAOs).

As part of Tim’s approach to HSE planning, a risk assessment was completed for every single demolition activity performed and JSAs implemented using a hierarchy of control. SAOs were also completed on a weekly basis.

Strong environmental outcomes also demonstrated industry best practice, with 98% of demolished materials recycled, exceeding the 95% target, resulting in 50 truck load out movements per day, requiring careful traffic management.

Tim was also congratulated on his careful management of subcontractors, consultation with key stakeholders, monitoring of all specialist plant and equipment, and his ability to go above and beyond, providing assistance to on the job training to six Aboriginal workers from Intract Indigenous Contractors.

We congratulate Tim and the project team for their achievements and dedication to safety.
