Christmas with a different view

Removal and replacement of over 13,000 square metres of asbestos roof sheeting

Two CSBP fertiliser production plants requiring asbestos roof removal and reinstatement works took McMahon Services to Kwinana and Albany in Western Australia over the 2012 Christmas holiday period.

In Albany, the team tackled a 3,300 square metre Rock Shed and an 8,000 square metre Super Storage Shed. The asbestos roof sheeting was removed and replaced with double coated Ultra-Roof Sheeting for maximum durability.

Safety was a major focus, especially due to the continued operations at the Plant. Through close consultation and radio communication, McMahon Services was able to monitor and coordinate truck deliveries, which required access in and out of the facilities where roofing works were occurring overhead.

The next stop was Kwinana, where the Super Manufacturing Plant had already shutdown for recommencement of works in early January.

The McMahon team removed and replaced 2,025 square metres of asbestos roofing and 380 square metres of external wall sheeting with stainless steel sheeting as well as translucent sheeting to the Eastern wall.

Weather conditions provided challenges on both projects, with the team enduring sporadic wind and rain in Albany, and soaring temperatures of over 40 degrees in Kwinana.

The teams staggered their working hours and days to maximise favourable conditions and to get the job done safely and on time.
