Project Overview
McMahon Services were engaged by the ACT Government to undertake the safe removal of an Underground Petroleum Storage System (UPSS) and contaminated soil located at the Fyshwick works depot facility, as part of their due diligence and liability removal focus. This work included the degassing, cleaning and in-ground removal of two large underground storage tanks, canopy demolition and fuel dispenser infrastructure removal. All works were performed in accordance with an established Remedial Action Plan, specially developed for the site works.
The project scope included:
- Establishment of on site temporary stockpiling and landfarm location, ensuring all landfarm locations have appropriate sediment and erosion controls in accordance with ACT EPA requirements;
- Removal of two 55,000 litre underground storage tanks (UST). Both tanks were drained of residual liquid waste, degassed and removed from the tank pit;
- Approximately 600 tonnes of hydrocarbon contaminated soil was excavated from the tank pit, fuel dispensing area and interceptor pit locations. This was stockpiled on site and later transferred to an appropriate licensed waste facility;
- Excavation and removal of UST infrastructure including dispensers, valves, pipework and vents;
- Removal of overhead canopy structure;
- Removal of surface concrete from beneath the former canopy area, the tank pit was backfilled with certified clean material and compacted using a vibrating roller to achieve specific soil density;
- Site surface reinstatement with a combination of asphalt and concrete slab pathway and kerbing;
- Removal of UPSS;
- Installation of carpark, including wheel stops and line marking.
McMahon Services recycled 92% of the materials, with the project being completed within a four week timeframe. The works on this project included varying disciplines comprising of hazardous waste removal, engineering, environmental remediation and civil works, showcasing our ability to work across a variety of disciplines and offer a range of services for the client.
