Project Overview
SA Power Networks operates an electricity distribution network that stretches across South Australia, comprising of 87,000km of high voltage and low voltages power lines with voltages ranging up to and including 66kV servicing over 860,000 customers across an area covering over 178,000 square kilometres. The network, much of which was built in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, comprises about 1,845 feeders around the State, more than 400 zone substations, 70,000 transformers and approximately 650,000 stobie poles.
Scope of Work
For over two decades, McMahon Services has provided SA Power Networks with asbestos removal, destruction and clean-up services and associated demolition and reinstatement works across the state of South Australia.
Both planned and emergency response services are provided and include roofing, walls, panels, cladding, electrical switch gear, conduits, pits and other asbestos-containing materials from SA Power Network sites in metropolitan, rural and remote locations. All asbestos is contained in 200µm double wrap plastic and disposed of at Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) licenced landfills. McMahon Services also provides air monitoring and sampling at each site where asbestos-containing materials are recovered. Works consist of demolition of asbestos-containing materials and their reinstatement, and includes roofs, walls and other building infrastructure.
McMahon Services manages a network of over 30 asbestos waste bins in metropolitan Adelaide, country and remote regions such as Ceduna, Streaky Bay, Wundinna, Cleve, Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Clare, Nuriootpa, Kadina, Yorktown, Barmera, Murray Bridge, Gumeracha, Victor Harbour, Naracoorte, Bordertow, Mount Gambier and Kangaroo Island. Each bin can contain up to 2m3 of asbestos containing waste with the waste being transported to EPA licenced landfills at least twice yearly.
The contract remediates SA Power Network sites of approximately 50t of friable and non-friable asbestos containing materials and 80m2 of asbestos sheeting every year. All personnel on the contract are SafeWork SA Class A Asbestos Removal licenced and EPA Listed Waste Removal licenced.
