Project Overview
Viterra operates a storage and handling network spanning South Australia and western Victoria with a total storage capacity of over 10 million tonnes. They provide a range of services including storage and warehousing, receival and elevation, quality assessment, logistics and accumulation, quality control and food safety, electronic transactional services, container packing and bulk ship loading. Viterra’s Port Giles grain ship loading facilities is a deep-water berth, situated on the eastern side of Yorke Peninsula 217km by road from Adelaide.
McMahon Services were engaged by Viterra Australia to replace deteriorated roof sections on the Port Giles Block 1 and 2 over silo conveyor gallery and 20 roof vents.
Works included the removal and replacement of roof cladding and roof vents as well as wall and roof flashings. Roofing materials included 1300m² of .60 Ultra Colorbond custom blue orb roof sheeting, .55 Ultra Colorbond flashings and 20 stainless steel static roof vents each 500mm diameter. Works were to stop water ingress which had been affecting grain storage in the cells and on the conveyor belts.
An engineered platform was installed to the lower roof for loading of scaffolding. Scaffolding was erected at height and allowed for the safe replacement of roof cladding. To further minimise working at up to heights of 42m, many components were constructed at ground level before being lifted into place by a 90t hydraulic boom crane. The crane with a dog box was also used to complete the initial stage of cladding replacement works.
Wind and weather were a major risk on the project and was monitored closely. Despite these challenges works were completed safely and to specification.
