North Queensland Demolition Program at Multiple Sites

Project Overview

McMahon Services were engaged by Augility to undertake the demolition of existing buildings and structures at Defence sites throughout Queensland. Furthermore, it was identified that some of these defunct buildings and structures contained asbestos, lead-based paint, with the possible presence of contaminated soils and contaminated concrete ground slabs.

Therefore, the intention of the demolition and removal of these defunct buildings and structures was to be in accordance with all environmental, health, safety and heritage requirements. On completion of demolition and removal, each site was cleaned with all remaining debris removed and disposed of appropriately, and the site returned to that of a greenfield site.

The demolition works were carried out in a safe and efficient manner, while minimising the impact on Defence operations at each site.

Works at RAAF Base Amberley comprised the demolition of a single-story steel framed building and a section of a two-story building with a cellar. Other works included the demolition of six single-story buildings containing asbestos and constructed with a variety of materials including timber, masonry, steel and concrete. Some buildings required the removal of underground storm water tanks and inground septic systems.

Works at Gallipoli Barracks included the demolition of four single-story buildings constructed of steel frame and masonry with concrete foundations and with asbestos containing materials.

Lavarack Barracks works included the demolition of a two-story building with concrete floors, steel frame and tin roof. Asbestos containing materials included wall and ceiling cladding, sealant, floor coverings, pipes and fire doors. A single-story shed with a steel frame and concrete slab and footings was also demolished.

All asbestos containing materials were treated as fibrous, wrapped in double layer 2000µm plastic and disposed of offsite at licenced EPA receiving stations. Other hazardous materials treated and disposed under similar conditions included synthetic mineral fibres fire hydrants, organochlorine pesticides in contaminated concrete slabs and soils, ozone depleting substances in air conditioning units, lead-based paint, and flammable and non-flammable gas in storage.

Stringent controls were in place to ensure a  clean worksite to minimise the risk of foreign object debris impacting Defence flights on operational bases. Spotters were used to identify and remove any wildlife on each work site
