Kooragang Island Asbestos Removal

Project Overview

Removal of Deep 6 asbestos sheeting from an operational plant on Kooragang Island, NSW.

McMahon Services was engaged by Incitec Pivot to complete asbestos removal works at their fertiliser facility on Kooragang Island in New South Wales.

The project required the removal of Deep 6 asbestos sheeting from the Bagging Tower, totalling approximately 800m2 of roofing and cladding.

A key requirement of the project was to keep the plant operational, so scaffolding was erected on the internal walls of the tower and encapsulated with plastic to create a safe working environment for the personnel working inside.

Once the asbestos sheeting was removed, the team reinstated the roofing and cladding with Deep 6 PVC. Given the location of the Tower and surrounding structures, all removal and reinstatement works were completed utilising a crane and man-box.

There were several external factors that contributed to a challenging working environment. The project team was faced with bushfires in neighbouring areas and associated ash, as well as inclement weather conditions, with rain reaching up to 100mm daily and high winds.

Despite the challenging circumstances, the highly skilled project team of in-house asbestos technicians and roofers were able to complete the scope of works one week ahead of schedule and caused no disruption to the daily operation of the plant.
