Project Overview
Removal of 11,000 square metres of asbestos roof, remediation of 4,000 cubic metres of the site and demolition of 6 structures.
McMahon Services were contracted to undertake this high-risk major asbestos roof removal and demolition of existing derelict structures at the former Islington Rail Workshop site. The site was located at the intersection of two busy roads, in view of the public.
Prior to demolition works, McMahon Services prepared the site with the removal of 11,000 square metres of deep 6 bonded asbestos roof from 6 buildings. McMahon Services’ 250 tonne excavator was brought in lever roofing personnel onto the unstable, white ant eaten roof, attached to the cage box by safety harnesses. The bonded asbestos sheets were systematically and carefully peeled from the deteriorating structures, and placed into bins for safe disposal. Air-monitoring testing was undertaken, as required by SafeWork SA.
Challenges:
The scope of work broadened when in-ground asbestos contamination was discovered. McMahon Services civil team was sent in to remediate approximately 4000 cubic metres of the site. Friable asbestos was also found around air-conditioners in the structures to be removed.
Once all asbestos had been safely removed, demolition of the six structures commenced. Waste was sorted and transported from site, including scrap-steel, non-ferrous metals, timber paving, masonry and concrete. All timber and foliage was chipped and removed from site to be recycled for garden bed mulch in line with Environmental Best Practice.
Later works included laying new power lines prior to the construction of new building.
