Project Overview
Remedial asbestos and demolition works on Heron Island.
McMahon Services was engaged by Hindmarsh Plumbing to carry out remedial asbestos and demolition works for the following structures located on Heron Island:
- Staff accommodation house
- 100,000 litre concrete lined water storage tank
Heron Island is located in a World Heritage Listed area approximately 72 kilometres North-East off the coast from Gladstone. Due to the very sensitive nature of carrying out the works in a World Heritage Listed area, McMahon Services had to develop a method for the asbestos removal and demolition works that had absolutely minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
Project requirements included:
- Removal of approximately 100m2 of internal and external asbestos ceiling and walls
- Demolition of the remaining structure and a water tank including all footings and concrete slabs
- De-contamination of soil located beneath the water tank
At the completion of the de-contamination works, approximately 12 cubic metres of asbestos debris and five tonnes of scrap steel was removed from the site.
Due to the effective operation methods developed by McMahon Services, the project was successfully completed within the allocated timeframe and on budget.
