Hardstand Construction and Bulk Civil Earthworks

Project Overview

McMahon Services were engaged by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) to complete this project, located at the Jones Road stockpile site, Bolivar.

The project involved the construction of an 80,000 square metre hardstand, used to store materials from the Torrens to Torrens Project (T2T Project). The team was required to place and compact DPTI supplied material to create the hardstand, however due to a shortage of DPTI material, McMahon Services was asked to source and supply suitable quarry material which met DPTI’s specifications.

The project scope included:

  • Grade 150mm of material into windrows for inspection by cultural heritage monitors;
  • Pick-up cleared windrows with landplane and place in stockpile. Originally DPTI were going to use a loader and various trucks – which would have taken more time, more budget resources and more plant movements in a sensitive area. McMahon Services proposed the use of a landplane which provided an alternative;
  • Rip and prepare subgrade;
  • Place and compact DPTI supplied material (recycled rubble) to create 150mm hardstand;
  • Import, place and compact quarry rubble to create 150mm hardstand;
  • Survey pick-up of the area for future use;
  • Import and place rubble to upgrade access road for the organisation ‘Riding for the Disabled’;
  • Widen existing floodway crossover;
  • Construct new creek crossing for ‘Riding for the Disabled’.

Changes to the scope due to cultural heritage sensitivities and time constraints led to the exploration of innovative solutions, with McMahon Services utilising the landplane, as opposed to loaders and trucks. Using the landplane reduced the project duration by 50%, which also reduced the time cultural heritage monitors were required onsite.
