Project Overview
McMahon Services were engaged to undertake the demolition of a three-storey building located at 62-68 Hindley Street, and the demolition of an adjacent two-storey building and single-storey building in Blyth Street, in Adelaide’s CBD.
The 1785 m2 site will be transformed into a new 245 room ‘Holiday Inn Express’ – a hotel chain focusing on limited services at a reasonable price for business travelers and short-term stays
The project scope included the following:
- Site establishment;
- Removal and keep safe of the council’s artworks and traffic signs that were installed on the property wall fronting Blyth Street;
- Removal of hazardous materials;
- Demolition of buildings to underside of slab and footings;
- Demolition of nominated pavements surfaces including bitumen, kerbs, gutters etc;
- Removal of all demolition waste from site;
- Design and construction of a perimeter retention system (footings, raking struts, whalers) required to support sides as necessary to ensure a safe working environment;
- Removal of redundant retaining walls;
- Excavation to underside of new basement / ground slab level;
- Excavation of material to lines and levels making allowances for compaction of surfaces where required;
- Testing of soil material as per authority requirements prior to removal of any material from site;
- Backfill of existing Northern basement with approved fill material and compaction in accordance with geotechnical requirements;
- Installation of a jersey kerb with fencing on top of adjacent basements and excavations.
By adapting a collaborative approach, the works were successfully delivered by the McMahon Services project team. Potential issues associated with the surrounding stakeholders and stability of adjoining structures were successfully managed throughout the works.
When working in such a restricted site, with limited access and continual interaction with the public, there are many risks associated, however all were effectively managed without incident or damage to property, personnel or local environment.
