Berth N Dolphin Removal

Project Overview

Flinders Ports is South Australia’s leading privately owned port operator with seven ports located across the state. Founded 175 years ago, Port Adelaide is the main maritime gateway for South Australia. One of South Australia’s earliest settlements the site became South Australia’s first state heritage area in the 1980s.

This project involved the demolition of dolphin structures at Berth N in Port Adelaide. Works included the complete removal of all timber dolphin structures including ladders, bollards, decking, crossbeams, cross-braces and other timber structures, and gangways.

Works included establishing scaffolds on a barge in order to undertake manual demolition works. This commenced with the removal of rails and trusses on walkways, then lifting out the walkways using a crane.

The dolphin removal works required cutting of structure to sea level with work crews operating off the barge. Divers working underwater cut and removed all underwater sections. All materials were lifted by crane straight into trucks for offsite disposal. Spotters with radios and water barriers were utilised to ensure pipework adjacent to the works were not damaged.

Works were undertaken adjacent to a fuelling facility at the adjacent Berth M. Works stopped while vessel refuelling was underway. Full traffic management procedures were in place at all times during the works.
