Australian National Remediation and Rail Recovery

Project Overview

McMahon Services has delivered a number of rail recovery and remediation projects throughout Australian National’s rail network.

McMahon Services were awarded the contract for the remediation of all Federal Government railway properties throughout Australia. The wide variety of projects carried out demonstrates McMahon Services’ flexibility and ability to respond to complex remediation tasks.

The projects assigned by Australian National include:

Remediation of the rail corridor between Port Pirie and Kalgoorlie including:

  • Demolition of redundant buildings and infrastructure at over 50 various sites
  • Remediation of various asbestos and Hydrocarbon contaminated sites
  • Removal of all redundant rail and sleepers along the full length of the rail line (1700+km

Remediation of Rail Corridor between Tarcoola and Alice Springs including:

  • Demolition of redundant buildings and infrastructure at over 20 various sites
  • Remediation of various asbestos and Hydrocarbon contaminated sites
  • Removal of all redundant rail and sleepers along the full length of the rail line (800+km)

Completed over two years the operations involved a permanent mobile rail camp of 20 operatives and seven machines

Further remediation projects include:

  • Remediation of surface asbestos contamination, Islington Railyard site
  • Arsenic contaminated soil remediation, Mount Bryan
  • Underground diesel fuel bunkers removal, Islington
  • Removal and disposal of cyanide baths and cyanide contamination, Stirling North
  • Removal and remediation of fuelling facility, Stirling North
  • Removal and remediation of various underground storage tanks, Tailem Bend
  • Remediate environmental defects AN South-East lines

As part of the Australian National Remediation project, McMahon Services also undertook the removal and salvage of the 80 km section of track between Tonganah and Herrick in North East Tasmania. Completed through difficult terrain with limited road access, the project involved the collection and sale of approximately 200,000 sleepers and transport of 2,000 tonnes of rail to Launceston.

Much of the salvaged rail and sleepers were reused by the Tasmanian State Government to re-construct the ABT Tourist Rail in South West Tasmania.
