Site remediation and demolition works for all three stages of HNA Head Contract.
McMahon Services undertook the successful site remediation and demolition works for all three stages of HNA Head Contract, working with builder’s Baulderstone, ABI Group and Built Environs.
The HNA precinct site encompassed a total area of 400,000 square metres with over 100 buildings requiring removal. Considerable site born friable and bonded asbestos was discovered within and around existing structures.
Due to McMahon Services strong capability and extensive experience with soil contamination, we were able to undertake all remediation works in-house, allowing for a smooth transition between continued demolition after the remediation process.
Exclusion zones were systematically set up for Defence operations to continue safely. Over the phases of the project the entire site was cleared, emu picking performed where required and top soiled.
Two underground containment cells were built to hold in excess of 20,000 cubic square metres of contaminated waste. A large Berm Wall was constructed 25 metres at the highest point and 32 metres wide to bury the contaminated waste. The wall acted as a noise barrier for the neighbouring airstrip. Wet weather throughout the works posed some challenges with flooded areas needing to be pumped out to continue works.
Due to the considerable number of structures to be demolished within a strict timeframe, there was significant emphasis placed on the management and coordination of resources. McMahon Services project and site management were proactive and flexible in their approach on a daily basis to ensure transitions between stage phases were smooth and deadlines were met. Weekly production and safety meetings were attended by the client and Project Supervisors’ from all trades.
McMahon Services ability to safely manage this high risk project and OHS, IR and HR requirements for the various sites was a key factor in ensuring the confidence of other trades / parties entering the site.
McMahon Services successfully met the strict guidelines for remediation works, passed all air monitoring reports completed by an external party at the end of every shift.
