Adelaide Convention Centre – Crane Pad Construction

Project Overview

McMahon Services were engaged to undertake this project as part of the Adelaide Convention Centre redevelopment, in the Adelaide CBD. The project involved the construction of a crane pad, hardstand and lay down area, on the bank of the River Torrens, in preparation for the new building works to commence. The works were undertaken simultaneously with the demolition of the existing Plenary Building being executed by the McMahon Services Demolition team.

The scope was as follows:

  • Protection of existing surface, services and existing infrastructure;
  • Installation of perimeter fence;
  • Demolition of original path areas, retaining walls, light poles and services;
  • Installation of temporary storm water system;
  • Bulk earthworks to proposed bench level;
  • Disposal of 300t of asbestos contaminated soil;
  • 9000t of intermediate waste fill;
  • Construction of 1.5m height rubble pad – Every second layer was filled with a mesh layer of Tensar- a plastic mesh engineered to add strength to the pad.

There was extensive tracking of all imported and exported material leaving and entering the site, as well extensive environmental protection due to the proximity of the site to the River Torrens. McMahon Services worked extremely close with Lend Lease to ensure a high level of safety guidelines were reinforced and followed, including a full time McMahon Services Safety Officer on site at all times.Weekly safety meetings, safety audits, implementation of personnel and plant exclusion zones and extensive site inductions were undertaken, keeping the work site safe and free from incident.

Enforcing and maintaining Active Demolition Zones for all workers and keeping the plant and equipment separated by exclusion zones, in order to minimise overloading of floor slabs, was part of the management and safety of our workers and other site personnel. The extensive pre planning, management and coordination of transport through the one entry and exit point, involved strategic communications between the gate operations personnel and laydown area personnel, showcasing the McMahon Services team work, and in turn, maintaining the flow of the project.
