McMahon Services Awarded First Stage Old Royal Adelaide Hospital Demolition Project

We are excited to report that Mr Stephen Mullighan, Minister for Housing and Urban Development for the Government of South Australia, announced on Wednesday 6th September that McMahon Services has been selected as the preferred contractor for the first stage of demolition at the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site.

The works will be for the demolition and remediation of the East, Hone and Cobalt Wings, and will form part of the two hectares of hospital land to be transferred to the adjacent Adelaide Botanic Garden.

Minister Mullighan said in a statement to the press, “The demolition of these old and outdated buildings will be one of the biggest projects of this type ever undertaken in South Australia.”

Our company was awarded the project based on past success in delivering similar complex and high-risk demolition projects in Adelaide’s Central Business District including the Adelaide Oval, the former Harris Scarfe Building, the Advertiser Building and recently the Adelaide Convention Centre.

David McMahon, Managing Director of McMahon Services said of the win, “This is a high-risk project with many challenges. We are humbled that the Government of South Australia has placed their trust in us to deliver this high-profile demolition contract. McMahon Services will manage this project as head contractor working directly for the Government.

“Importantly for our company, this first stage is a huge demolition and urban renewal project and will offer McMahon Services many opportunities going forward.”

David noted the approach we have adopted for demolition takes into account the restricted access to site, the close proximity to the Botanic Gardens, the needs of local businesses and residents, and that several other buildings inside the old Royal Adelaide Hospital will remain operational during the demolition.

“On behalf of the company, I would like to thank the team that worked on this complex tender and we should all be proud of their achievement in securing this contract.”

Chris Latham, McMahon Services’ Manager Demolition and Decommissioning who led the tender said of the outcome, “I’m proud of this win and want to thank everyone who worked tirelessly to secure this prestigious project. It is also a win for South Australia and the people of Adelaide, keeping the work in state and further developing local industry capabilities.

“This project is highly complex and our company’s risk management tools and strategy shall play a key part in ensuring the process is delivered safely both for the public and the site workforce.”
