SA Entrepreneur Awarded

David McMahon wins Services Category at 2011 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards

Managing Director of McMahon Services, David McMahon was named winner of the 2011 Services Category at the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards in November.

The award rounds off a remarkable year for McMahon Services, which posted a growth of 37 per cent at the end of financial year 2010/2011 and has successfully completed projects with a combined value in excess of $1 billion.

The panel of nine judges agreed Mr McMahon was a true entrepreneur who had built a solid and sustainable company and had capitalised on diverse opportunities in mining and other areas.

Mr McMahon, who founded the business with his brother Andrew in 1990, said a culture of innovation had been central to the success of McMahon Services from its pioneering work in asbestos removal to encompassing large, multi-disciplinary projects spanning demolition, remediation, civil works and building services.

“We strive to be the leaders in everything we do and are always pushing to be different – whether through materials, equipment, delivery or people,” Mr McMahon said.

“We have experienced strong growth in the past year and have recently won a number of projects that demonstrate our national reach and breadth of expertise,” Mr McMahon said.

“We will shortly be starting a $30 million asbestos removal project in Queensland, which will create a number of new employment opportunities in Gladstone and call on our unique expertise in this area.

“We’ve also secured an asbestos removal job in Western Australia, a demolition job in Tasmania and are also supporting OZ Minerals in the expansion of its Carrapateena site. We also continue to play a major role in the Indigenous Housing Upgrade works throughout the Northern Territory.

“McMahon Services has long had a reputation as one of South Australia’s largest multi-disciplinary construction services companies and our national profile is rapidly growing.”

Innovation lies at the heart of McMahon Services’ success, the organisation took out a prestigious prize at this year’s Civil Contractors Federation National Earth Awards for the removal and treatment of high-level contaminated waste from the 15,000 square metre Mead Street, Birkenhead site.

“A combination of environmental best practice, recycling, site management and sustainability has led to the development of a number of new practices that are now setting the bench-mark for excellence in the industry,” Mr McMahon said.

McMahon Services also has a long history of working with and within Indigenous communities across Australia, something which Mr McMahon has made more formal through the launch of Intract – Indigenous Contractors earlier this year.

“We established Intract to train, employ and open long term career pathways for Indigenous Australians,” Mr McMahon said.

“During the past 20 years the construction industry has presented me with countless opportunities to learn, grow and develop new techniques and approaches and I am keen to now do the same for other Australians.”
