Construction and re-alignment of 200 metres of road and construction of a boardwalk.
This project involved the removal, construction and re-alignment of approximately 200 metres of road at a T-section, including the relocation of the existing roundabout. The new open space created by these works made way for a new steel and timber boardwalk access to the beach.
Traffic management, in particular on Grundy Terrace was of high importance due to the number of businesses continuing to operate during construction works. Complete road closure was required along the Esplanade and Beach Road to ensure the safe operation of works. Continuous toilet block and beach access was maintained throughout the duration of the project. A letter drop initiated by McMahon Services kept the surrounding community updated with site activities and progress.
Project works within the road re-construction included stormwater, drainage, electrical works and irrigation system installation. Subcontractors were engaged to complete kerbing, bitumen, linemarking and traffic management. During road construction, additional car park spaces were created.
The timber beach access boardwalk was constructed on multiple founding materials on a steep embankment and included the incorporation and access to the existing gross pollutant trap. Footings consisted of galvanised screw piles with concrete pile caps in the sandy beach location as well as pad footings in the embankment.
The main structure of the boardwalk was the treated timber decking, railing, completed with galvanised fence panels and stainless steel handrails. Lighting was incorporated inside the timber posts for a great aesthetic feature. Construction times were required to be flexible to work around tidal conditions and inclement weather. Footpaths were constructed using coloured honed concrete and block pavers. Landscaping and the installation of new seats, benches and traffic signs completed works.
