  • Amcor Fibre Packaging approached McMahon Services to demolish and dispose of existing super structure including; Power House, Boiler House and Turbine Room. Additionally we were to dispose of decontaminated asbestos from boilers.

    Materials Removed

    • 2000m3 of friable asbestos and 500m2 of bonded asbestos sheeting
    • 500m of asbestos pipe lagging
    • 3000 tonnes of brick and concrete transported from site for crushing and re-use
    • 2000 tonnes of steel
    • 7 tonnes of copper
    • 100 tonnes of timber
    • 280 tonnes of Asbestos was sent to an EPA dedicated landfill site

    Issues to Overcome

Removal of the turbine room roof while maintaining power to the switch room below. The switch room and transformer for the new boilerhouse remained operational during the project. These locations were protected by constructing steel frame canopies above and around to produce an air tight capsule.

A 33,000 volt line was of considerable concern. Located under the turbine room, the line had deteriorated over time and special care had to be taken to avoid excessive vibration in this area. The boiler room dimensions were considerable: 29 metres in height, 65 metres x 31 metres.

Equipment used included 450 tonne and 100 tonne cranes and a long-arm excavator with a 26 metre reach. A team of up to 32 workers were employed on the project including a team of eight specialists from Adelaide.
